Strangers at the Table

Strangers at the Table
Last week I walked into a wine tasting knowing almost no one. Two hours later, I was swapping recipes, debating which glass was the star of the evening and laughing with people who had been strangers when I arrived - and I could see the same thing happening all around the room.

Wine has always had this magic. The ancient Greeks built a whole tradition around it - the symposium, where friends gathered to share wine, music and long conversation. Thousands of years later, the setting has changed, but the ritual has stayed.

Part of the magic, I think, is that wine is never made alone. It passes through the hands of growers in the vineyard, winemakers in the cellar, and the people who carry each bottle out into the world. Something created together seems to ask to be shared together.

And sharing is where the magic comes alive. A bottle on the table gives everyone something to talk about - a scent to describe, a region to remember, an opinion to defend. No need for expertise, only curiosity. Before you notice, the conversation has drifted from the wine to travel, family, and when you'll meet again.

The bottle empties - the connection doesn't.

So next time you're invited to a tasting and don't know a soul there, go anyway. Pour a glass, ask the person beside you what they taste, and see where it leads. You may arrive alone, but you'll rarely leave that way.

With wine greetings
